I have been trying to research the steps in becoming a librarian.
Am I correct in that you have to have a Master's degree before you are allowed to take the TeXes?
Can I ask where you went to school? I will probably have to do it all online because there isn't a school close by that has Library Science.
thanks in advance for any help and advice,
glynette
No, you don't have to have a Master's degree. You just have to have a teaching certification, have taught in the classroom at least two years, and then take the course work toward the school library certification. If you choose to get your Master's in Library Science from an ALA accredited university, you will be able to move into other areas of librarianship (public libraries, universities, etc.); however, you don't need a Master's degree to be a school librarian in Texas.
Actually, if you didn't take the ExCet for the Learning Resources Endorsement (and I assume, apply for it) prior to January 2001, then you do have to have a master's degree. It doesn't have to be in library sciences, but you do have to take classes in a university program. Now, to take the TeXes, that just requires a sticker from your program office saying that you are enrolled in and expected to complete the program. (Similar to when a person who's not quite done with his or her undergrad in education is allowed to take one of the certification exams because completion of a preparation program is pending.)
