Since I am brand spanking new to this profession, I was hoping to hear some of the best advice or lesson you have learned since you became a Library Goddess.
I learned MANY things this first year, but mostly in "sink or swim" mode. Can't wait to learn more...
People before paper (or phones or email--you get it)! Always stop what you are doing and give that warm body in front of you your full attention. Let the phone ring if someone is talking to you. If someone comes in and asks "Are you busy?" I never say "no." I say "Yes, but not too busy for you. What can I help you with?" These simple courtesies make people feel at home and keep them coming back. Good luck. You WILL be busy, but it is the most fun kinda busy I know.
If you want to connect to students, read what's new out there! The best feeling in the world is when a student tells another student, "Ask the librarian - she can get you hooked up with something good!" And yes...grant yourself time during school to read, even if it's 30 minutes.
Work hard on your relationships with teachers. They need to know that you want them and their students in the library. Anticipate their needs as much as possible. There's nothing sadder than an empty library!
Well, i'm no "goddess" but I think the best advice for the first year is don't try and do everything your first year. You will have a high level of frustration if you think the entire program has to be in place your first time out.
Be flexible to the point of breaking and always be there for classroom teacher needs; WHATEVER they may be. If you show them you are good in an area that might not be totally "library," they will be a whole lot more likely to want to work with you when the time is right. My teachers know that I will do anything for them and that has contibuted greatly to my success with my lessons and collaboration. It also doesn't hurt to make them think you might be just a little bit crazy...in a good way.
