I am always on the look out for interesting (and affordable) visiting authors for grades 5-12. I have two in mind, both of whom are interested in coming, but they would like to have 2-4 days of school lined up. Plus, that makes the airfare more affordable -- split several ways instead of just one.
One author who is interested, possibly in conjunction with TLA (end of April, 2008) is Jim Murphy. He writes fascinating non-fiction for the middle school/high school audiences (An American Plague, The Great Fire, Blizzard) and his books are consistenly given starred reviews places like School Library Journal, Booklist and Kirkus. I have heard him speak at TLA and he could do a great program on "the research method" sort of topic for middle school or high school audiences. His honorarium (when I talked with him last year) was around $1,700 for three programs in a day.
A second person I am very interested in is Susan Pfeffer. She has two recent fiction books that are fabulous: Life as We Knew It and the dead & the gone. They both examine the same event, but from different cities: an asteroid hits the moon and knocks it out of orbit. The ensuing chaos means life on earth is changed forever. Both boys and girls in middle school will be riveted by these books. Ms. Pfeffer is available NEXT fall (Oct. 2009.). Her honorium is $1,000 for 4 programs, and she is willing to go to two schools in a day if transportation is provided and the timing will fit.
If either one of these programs sounds interesting (and if you are in the D/FW area) please contact me at my school email so we can try to put a three-day visit together. If you know of any other schools (or public libraries) that may be interested, please pass along this email. Thanks
