I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that, according to the state, librarians aren't necessary in schools. There is a growing trend not to replace retiring librarians. Aides and volunteers can do the job, you know. In the midst of raising the b...

I just joined the ning, and then I checked out the groups. Since I am about to start my first job as an elementary librarian, I didn't see a group that was "just right" for me. No problem, I boldly thought I would start one. The group starter insisted on an image (even though the other groups only had generic images) so I gave it something from my computer but then it kicked the whole thing out and gave me some sort of error message. I tried to go back, but was told that the web page had expired. I'll watch and wait for now, but thought you might like to know about my experience. I am looking forward to "ninging" ; one of many new experiences for me...

About Me:
I began my library career in 1984 after graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English and Journalism from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. After graduating, my high school principal offered me a position as the librarian at Braggs Public Schools (a K-12 school in Oklahoma where I had graduated from a class of only 23 students!) So I immediately returned to college and began my library certification while working full-time at the school.

After 18 months and 24 hours of coursework, I received my library certification and continued working as the school librarian for four years. In 1988, I was hired as a high school English and Spanish teacher in Vian, Oklahoma. After two years, I realized that I wanted to continue working as a librarian and applied for a position at the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

While at OSB, I received my visual impairment certification which allowed me to teach blind and visually impaired students (and learn Braille in order to catalog materials). Then in 1997, I started work on my Master's degree at the University of Oklahoma.

I completed my Master's degree in 1999 and was hired as an Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University where I worked in the Curriculum Materials Library (which served the College of Education). In 2001, my family and I moved to Texas where I worked as the Head Librarian at Trinity Valley School. Then in 2004, I began work as the Technology Librarian for Fort Worth Country Day School. In 2006, I moved back into the public school arena where I worked for Arlington ISD, and in 2007 I was hired as the District Librarian for Peaster ISD.

I currently write the "Digital Resources" column for "School Library Journal" and have also started writing a "Technology" column for "Library Sparks." I am an active member of the Texas Library Association, the American Library Association, and the Texas Computer Educators' Association.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Is it just me or does everyone have that "wanderlust" to just do something different? I'm completely bored with the "same old thing"....and it seems that every situation quickly becomes the "same old thing." Regardless of a few high spots that occur (new projects every now and then, a new piece of equipment to use, a new teacher to work with), there just seems to be a comfort zone that we fall into that often swallows us whole before we realize it. (At least in the situations that I've been i
